Fall Prevention at Home
Falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults — but many are preventable with a few simple changes.
Why fall prevention matters
A single fall can mean a fracture, a hospital stay, and a lasting loss of independence. The good news: most falls happen for predictable, fixable reasons — and a safer home dramatically lowers the risk.
Simple steps to a safer home
- Remove loose rugs, cords, and clutter from walkways
- Add grab bars in the bathroom and railings on stairs
- Improve lighting, especially on stairs and hallways and at night
- Wear supportive, non-slip footwear
- Review medications that can cause dizziness with a nurse or doctor
- Build strength and balance with guided exercises
